Violet Red Bile Glucose Agar (VRBGA), 90mm Plate is a ready-to-use prepared plate supplied by SGL for detection and enumeration of Enterobacteriaceae in food and environmental samples, as described in the European Pharmacopoeia (EP) 2.6.13, United States Pharmacopeia (USP) <61>, ISO 21528 and ISO 11133.

It is suitable for use in pharmaceutical microbiology; biotechnology; environmental monitoring; environmental testing.

Yeast extract supplies essential vitamins, while gelatin provides carbon and nitrogen to support microbial growth. Glucose acts as the fermentable carbohydrate, and sodium chloride maintains osmotic balance. Bile salts and crystal violet provide selectivity by inhibiting many Gram-positive bacteria. Enterobacteriaceae, including Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp., ferment glucose and produce acid. The resulting fall in pH causes the neutral red indicator to form pink colonies. Strong acid production may also precipitate the bile salts, creating a visible halo around glucose-fermenting colonies. Bile-tolerant organisms that do not ferment glucose, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, may grow but typically produce colourless colonies without bile precipitation.

Violet Red Bile Glucose Agar (VRBGA) is manufactured in compliance with ISO 9001 (Ref. No. FM37824) and tested in accordance with ISO11133 by a UKAS (ISO 17025) accredited laboratory (Ref. No. 4356).
