MacConkey Agar No. 3 (+ Salt and Crystal Violet), 90mm Plate
MacConkey Agar No. 3 is used for the cultivation of Enterobacteriaceae and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. A modification recommended by the W.H.O. and the American Public Health Association for the isolation of Enterobacteriaceae from waters and sewage. The medium has been made more selective than MacConkey’s original formula by the use of crystal violet as well as bile salts. Gram positive organisms will not grow on this medium.

8071SCV – MacConkey Agar No. 3 (+ Salt and Crystal Violet), 90mm Plate is a ready-to-use prepared plate supplied by SGL for selective isolation and differentiation of Gram-negative enteric organisms. It is suitable for use in pharmaceutical microbiology; water testing; environmental testing. Manufactured and quality controlled to SGL internal specifications.
Manufactured in compliance with ISO 9001 (Ref. No. FM37824) and tested by a UKAS (ISO 17025) accredited laboratory (Ref. No. 4356) and any additional specification testing may be performed as requested by the customer.
MacConkey Agar No. 3 (+ Salt and Crystal Violet) is a medium used to differentiate between coliforms and non-lactose fermenters with inhibition of Gram-positive micrococci. The medium complies with the requirements of the APHA for the examination of foods, water and wastewater. With the addition of bile salts and crystal violet, the medium gives improved differentiation. Escherichia coli presents as pink/red colonies with bile precipitation which is easy to differentiate from Salmonella and Shigella spp. as they present as straw coloured colonies.

- food – detection of Shigella spp. and Salmonella spp. in routine quality checks
- water – identification of E.coli in drinking water
- dairy – milk based products to detect lactose fermenting bacteria
