Tryptone Bile X-Glucuronide (TBX) Agar, Syrup

Description

4839- SGL supplies Tryptone Bile X-Glucuronide (TBX) syrup in ready-to-use bottle medium for detecting and enumerating β-D-glucuronidase-positive Escherichia coli. Applications include food, beverage, animal-feed and water testing, subject to the requirements of the selected method.

TBX Agar provides a selective, chromogenic medium for enumerating β-D-glucuronidase-positive E. coli in products intended for human and animal consumption. Where the procedure and product format apply, it supports workflows described in ISO 16649-1, ISO 16649-2 and ISO 16649-3, alongside applicable performance-testing requirements of ISO 11133.

Most E. coli strains produce β-D-glucuronidase, which helps distinguish them from other coliforms. Tryptone supplies carbon, nitrogen, amino acids and other essential growth nutrients, while bile salts inhibit Gram-positive organisms, including bacilli and enterococci.

X-glucuronide acts as a chromogenic substrate for detecting β-D-glucuronidase activity. Enzyme-positive E. coli cells take up and hydrolyse X-glucuronide, producing a coloured compound that gives colonies their characteristic blue-green appearance. Most E. coli O157 strains lack this enzyme activity and therefore do not produce the characteristic colour.

Agar solidifies the medium and provides a stable surface for colony development.

SGL manufactures and quality-controls the product to its internal specifications and in compliance with ISO 9001 (reference FM37824). A UKAS-accredited laboratory operating to ISO/IEC 17025 (accreditation number 4356) tests the product. At the customer’s request, the laboratory can also perform additional specification testing.
