Description

8092 – SGL supplies Chromogenic Coliform Agar in ready-to-use 90 mm plates for routine microbiological testing. The medium is suitable for water and environmental testing, the food and beverage industry, and contract testing laboratories.

Chromogenic Coliform Agar enables the simultaneous detection of β-glucuronidase-positive Escherichia coli and β-D-galactosidase-positive coliforms in food and water samples. Users can detect and differentiate target organisms within 24 hours according to their enzyme activity.

Yeast extract and peptone supply essential vitamins and nitrogen, while sodium chloride maintains osmotic balance. Sorbitol, tryptophan and sodium pyruvate support the recovery and detection of target organisms. Tergitol™ 7 acts as a surfactant and selective agent, suppressing many Gram-positive and non-coliform Gram-negative bacteria while allowing coliforms to grow.

β-D-galactosidase hydrolyses the Salmon-GAL chromogen, causing coliforms to produce pink-red colonies. E. coli also produces β-D-glucuronidase, which hydrolyses the X-glucuronide chromogen. Together, these reactions cause E. coli to form dark blue to violet colonies. Additional confirmation of E.coli by adding a drop of Kovac’s reagent onto the colony which forms a cherry red layer on the surface of the medium.

SGL manufactures and quality-controls the product to its internal specifications and in compliance with ISO 9001 (reference FM37824). A UKAS-accredited laboratory operating to ISO/IEC 17025 (accreditation number 4356) tests the product in accordance with ISO 11133. At the customer’s request, the laboratory can also perform additional specification testing.
