Description

4761 – Todd Hewit Broth is a ready-to-use bottled or bagged medium supplied by SGL for routine microbiological testing. It is suitable for use in pharmaceutical microbiology; clinical and contract testing laboratories. Manufactured and quality controlled to SGL internal specifications.

Todd Hewit Broth was initially developed to produce Streptococcal haemolysin and was further modified for the cultivation of Beta-haemolytic streptococci for different serological testing. It is the recommended medium for the cultivation of Group A haemolytic streptococci used for serologic studies, and when supplemented with gentamycin and nalidixic acid, it is recommended for the isolation of Group B Streptococci.

Peptone is the source of vitamins and minerals; heart infusion provides amino acids, peptides, carbohydrates and trace elements. Dextrose is the fermentable carbohydrate and sodium chloride provides osmotic stability. The peptones, meat and yeast extract support good growth of the Streptococcus spp. Fermentation of glucose leads to the destruction of haemolysin due to acid production. Due to this, the medium is buffered with sodium pyruvate and sodium bicarbonate. It has also been found that sodium pyruvate can stimulate pneumococcal growth.

SGL manufactures and quality-controls the product to its internal specifications and in compliance with ISO 9001 (reference FM37824). A UKAS-accredited laboratory operating to ISO/IEC 17025 (accreditation number 4356) tests the product. At the customer’s request, the laboratory can also perform additional specification testing.
