0675 – SGL supplies Acid Phosphatase Reagent, Syrup as a ready-to-use bottled reagent for water and environmental testing. SGL manufactures and quality-controls the product to its internal specifications.
Laboratories use the reagent to confirm presumptive Clostridium perfringens colonies isolated from water samples. The formulation supports the method described in The Microbiology of Drinking Water (2015) – Part 6.
C. perfringens produces acid phosphatase, which catalyses the hydrolysis of α-naphthyl phosphate and releases α-naphthol and phosphate. The α-naphthol then reacts with a diazonium salt to form a coloured azo dye. This reaction changes the reagent from light brown or amber to purple, dark red or dark brown, typically within three to four minutes of application to the bacterial colonies. The resulting colour indicates a positive reaction for C. perfringens.
The reagent provides an alternative biochemical method for confirming C. perfringens based on the organism’s expression of acid phosphatase.
