XLD agar, also known as Xylose Lysine Desoxycholate Agar (or Deoxycholate), selectively isolates Salmonella and Shigella species from clinical specimens, food, animal feed and environmental samples collected from food-production areas, as described in ISO 11133.
SGL manufactures in compliance with ISO 9001 (reference FM37824). A UKAS-accredited laboratory operating to ISO/IEC 17025 (reference 4356) tests the medium. The laboratory can also perform additional specification testing upon customer request.
XLD Agar contains the sugars xylose, lactose and sucrose. The medium differentiates Gram-negative enteric organisms according to their ability to ferment these sugars, decarboxylate lysine and produce hydrogen sulphide. Shigella cannot ferment xylose and therefore produces red colonies. Salmonella metabolises sodium thiosulphate to produce hydrogen sulphide, typically forming colonies with black centres.
