8080 – SGL supplies Rose Bengal Chloramphenicol Agar in ready-to-use 90 mm plates for routine microbiological testing. The medium is suitable for water and environmental testing, the food and beverage industry, and contract testing laboratories.

Rose Bengal Chloramphenicol Agar selectively isolates and enumerates fungi, particularly yeasts and moulds, in food, water and environmental samples. The medium’s neutral pH and chloramphenicol content suppress bacterial growth. Rose Bengal increases selectivity and restricts the spread of rapidly growing moulds, producing smaller colonies and supporting the reliable enumeration of slower-growing fungi. Fungal colonies absorb the Rose Bengal dye, which improves their visibility.

Soya peptone supplies carbon, nitrogen and other essential nutrients. Dextrose provides a readily available energy source, while magnesium sulphate supplies magnesium, sulphur and trace elements.

Users should minimise the medium’s exposure to light because Rose Bengal is photosensitive. Prolonged exposure causes the dye to degrade and form compounds that can inhibit or damage fungi. The medium is particularly suitable for fresh, protein-rich foods whose accompanying microbiota mainly consist of Gram-negative rods.

SGL manufactures and quality-controls the product to its internal specifications and in compliance with ISO 9001 (reference FM37824). A UKAS-accredited laboratory operating to ISO/IEC 17025 (accreditation number 4356) tests the product in accordance with ISO 11133. At the customer’s request, the laboratory can also perform additional specification testing.
