WL Differential Agar (WLD), 55mm Plate
A differential medium for the cultivation and enumeration of bacteria relevant to the brewing industry. The addition of 7mg per litre of cycloheximide inhibits any yeasts or moulds present.
Description
7642 – WL Differential Agar (WLD) 55mm Plate is a ready-to-use prepared plate supplied by SGL for routine microbiological testing. It is suitable for use in brewing/wine making sector. Manufactured and quality controlled to SGL internal specifications.
WL Differential Agar (WLD) is recommended for selective isolation and enumeration of bacteria found in breweries and industrial fermentation by the addition of cycloheximide.
It is to be used alongside WL Nutrient agar, and tests for acetic acid bacteria when incubated aerobically and for lactic acid bacteria and Pediococcus anaerobically. Following inoculation, users incubate the medium at 30°C for 24-48 hours.
Casein enzymic hydrolysate, alongside yeast extract supplies carbon, nitrogen and amino acids to support microbial growth. Dextrose provides a fermentable carbohydrate that supplies carbon and energy. Potassium phosphate buffers the medium, while potassium, calcium and ferric chloride supply essential ions and contribute to osmotic balance. Bromocresol green indicates changes in pH, and agar solidifies the medium to provide a stable surface for colony development. Cycloheximide inhibits recovery of yeasts and moulds.
SGL manufactures and quality-controls the product to its internal specifications and in compliance with ISO 9001 (reference FM37824). A UKAS-accredited laboratory operating to ISO/IEC 17025 (accreditation number 4356) tests the product. At the customer’s request, the laboratory can also perform additional specification testing.
