Description
8319 -WL Nutrient Agar (WLN), 55mm Plate is a ready-to-use prepared plate supplied by SGL for routine microbiological testing. It is suitable for use in the brewing/wine making sector. Manufactured and quality controlled to SGL internal specifications.
Laboratories use WL Nutrient Agar (WLN), also known as Wallerstein Laboratory Nutrient Agar, to cultivate yeasts, moulds and bacteria in mixed microbial populations from brewing and industrial fermentations. Researchers developed the medium following extensive studies of fermentation methods involving wort, beer and liquid yeast cultures.
Laboratories use WLN alongside WL Differential Agar because large yeast colonies on WLN can obscure bacterial growth. Following inoculation, users incubate the medium at 30°C for 24–48 hours.
Casein enzymic hydrolysate supplies carbon, nitrogen and amino acids to support microbial growth. Dextrose provides a fermentable carbohydrate that supplies carbon and energy. Potassium phosphate buffers the medium, while potassium, calcium and ferric chloride supply essential ions and contribute to osmotic balance. Bromocresol green indicates changes in pH, and agar solidifies the medium to provide a stable surface for colony development.
SGL manufactures and quality-controls the product to its internal specifications and in compliance with ISO 9001 (reference FM37824). A UKAS-accredited laboratory operating to ISO/IEC 17025 (accreditation number 4356) tests the product. At the customer’s request, the laboratory can also perform additional specification testing.
