Description

0510 -SGL supplies Nutrient Agar in ready-to-use universal containers for routine microbiological testing. It is suitable for food, water and dairy applications.

Nutrient Agar is a non-selective, general purpose medium for cultivating non–fastidious organisms from food/dairy products, water and wastewater. It is one of the most common media used for the enumeration of organisms from environmental samples as it mostly allows the isolation of bacteria and not other organisms such as fungi. The medium is ideal for demonstration/educational environments as the medium allows prolonged survival or cultures at ambient temperatures and there are no harmful components within the agar.

Peptone provides nitrogen and amino acids, beef extract and malt extract provides fermentable carbohydrates, carbon, vitamins, minerals and growth factors. Sodium chloride provides osmotic balance helping to prevent pH change of the media with organism growth. Agar is the solidifying agent which provides a stable surface  for the formation of colonies. Malt extract also enriches the medium, helping with the recovery of yeasts and moulds.

SGL manufactures and quality-controls the product to its internal specifications and in compliance with ISO 9001 (reference FM37824). A UKAS-accredited laboratory operating to ISO/IEC 17025 (accreditation number 4356) tests the product in accordance with ISO 11133. At the customer’s request, the laboratory can also perform additional specification testing.
