Description

4655 – SGL supplies MacConkey Broth EP/USP, Syrup as a ready-to-use bottled medium for the selective enrichment and differentiation of Gram-negative enteric organisms. It is suitable for pharmaceutical microbiology, cosmetics and personal-care testing, and the food and beverage industry.

The harmonised USP, Ph. Eur. and JP methods recommend MacConkey Broth for the selective enrichment of Escherichia coli from non-sterile samples. The medium conforms to the relevant harmonised performance specifications. Following enrichment, laboratories subculture the broth onto MacConkey Agar.

Gelatin peptone supplies nitrogen, while lactose provides a fermentable carbohydrate. Ox bile selectively inhibits most Gram-positive organisms, and bromocresol purple indicates changes in pH. During lactose fermentation, E. coli produces acid and gas. The acid changes the medium from purple to yellow, while an inverted Durham tube captures the gas.

SGL manufactures and quality-controls the product to its internal specifications and in compliance with ISO 9001 (reference FM37824). A UKAS-accredited laboratory operating to ISO/IEC 17025 (accreditation number 4356) performs product testing. At the customer’s request, the laboratory can also conduct additional specification testing.
