Description
0534P – Lowenstein-Jensen Medium Pyruvate, Universal is a ready-to-use bottled medium supplied by SGL for routine microbiological testing using a ready-to-use bottled. It is suitable for use in clinical and veterinary microbiology. Manufactured and quality controlled to SGL internal specifications.
Lowenstein–Jensen Medium with Pyruvate supports the isolation and cultivation of mycobacteria, particularly Mycobacterium bovis, from clinical and veterinary samples.
Lowenstein-Jensen Medium Base is a relatively simple formulation that requires supplementation in order to support the growth of mycobacteria. Sodium pyruvate replaces glycerol as glycerol can inhibit the growth of M. bovis whereas sodium pyruvate stimulates growth.
Pyruvate and an egg mixture are added together providing proteins and fatty acids required for mycobacteria metabolism. The coagulation of the egg albumin during sterilisation (inspissation) solidifies the medium, providing a solid surface for inoculation. L-asparagine provides nitrogen and vitamins where the potassium hydrogen phosphate and magnesium sulphate act as buffering agents and enhance the growth of the organism.
Malachite green is selective agent due to the inhibitory effect it has on organisms other than mycobacterium. It also provides a colour contrast.
SGL manufacture in compliance with ISO 9001 (Ref. No. FM37824) and tested in accordance with ISO 11133 by a UKAS (ISO 17025) accredited laboratory (Ref. No. 4356). If requested by the customer, he laboratory may perform additional specification testing.
