Milk Plate Count Agar, 90mm Plate

Description

7565 – SGL supplies Milk Plate Count Agar in ready-to-use, pre-poured 90 mm plates for routine microbiological testing. The medium is suitable for dairy, food and beverage, water and environmental testing.

Milk Plate Count Agar provides a non-selective medium for enumerating viable microorganisms in milk and other dairy products, including ice cream and whey. Laboratories can also use the medium to enumerate psychrotrophic microorganisms capable of growing under refrigerated conditions.

Tryptone supplies nitrogen and high levels of free amino acids, while yeast extract provides B-complex vitamins and other growth factors. Glucose provides a readily available energy source, and skimmed milk supplies lactose and casein. Agar solidifies the medium and provides a stable surface for colony development.

Contaminated dairy products can transmit pathogens such as Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli O157, Salmonella enterica and Campylobacter jejuni. However, Milk Plate Count Agar measures general viable microbial populations and does not selectively detect or identify these pathogens.

Where the selected procedure and product format apply, the medium can support colony-count workflows described in ISO 4833-2:2013 and ISO 17410:2019.

SGL manufactures and quality-controls the product to its internal specifications and in compliance with ISO 9001 (reference FM37824). A UKAS-accredited laboratory operating to ISO/IEC 17025 (accreditation number 4356) tests the product in accordance with ISO 11133. At the customer’s request, the laboratory can also perform additional specification testing.
